UK production of typical breakfast ingredients decreases between 1997 and 2012


Research recently conducted by our team revealed that more than half of the full English breakfast is produced outside the UK. The analysis shows that between 1997 and 2011 UK production decreased by 9%, from 57% to 48%. This clearly means that the majority of our English breakfasts are not 100% English.

Cosford Caravans is thankful to DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) for supplying the data for this research. They analysed the production of traditional ingredients of a typical English breakfast: pork (bacon, black pudding and sausages), eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, beans, toast, milk and tea.

The UK production of these ingredients was only 48% in 2011.

Moreover, the analysis of provisional data from 2012 gives the following results:

From the provisional data it is possible to confirm that between 1997 and 2012 UK production of typical breakfast ingredients decreased by 12%, from 57% to 45%, which is a reduction of 3% on the previous year. Is this trend set to continue?
